Battle of the Bulge

Some people decide to pick-up a healthy lifestyle so that they can lose weight. Good thing that wasn't MY motivation. I currently weigh more than I ever have before (with the exception of when I was pregnant). What is up with that? It's mostly in my mid-section. I have some serious tummy flab going on.

My daughter has been tracking her weight and height since the beginning of the year. She is now a half inch taller than me and weighs a full 24pounds less. There is a 6 inch difference in our waist measurments. I was whining about this to her, and she mustered up all her teenage wisdom and said "Mom, you've had two kids and you're OLD. You look good for your age. I hope I look as good as you do when I'm old". Thanks, dear.

Old me and my tummy flab better get our act together, because Husband and I are now signed up for the Duke City half-marathon on 21-Oct. Bring it on!!

  1. Sounds like your daughter is a wise young woman :-) In our intevening years, we've learned to pack it away in lots of different places! LOL. Bring on the half marathon!! Woo hoo!!!

  3. I'm love how your daughter compliments you while stressing the "OLD" part! Teenagers have a way with words, huh? I can always count on mine to be brutally honest with me.

I'm so excited you are doing the Duke City Half!!!

  4. Ouch. This same daughter wasn't expecting a car in her near future or anything...was she? She keeps making cracks like that and she will be riding a bike everywhere.

I found my weight loss had more to do with portion control than anything else. I just kept doing what I was doing, but cut the total caleries down enough to gradually loose 20 pounds in the last 6 months. If you do that, it will work without having to eat tasteless food you can't stand.

  5. I'm in the same boat Lisa - exercising like a loony but just maintaining my weight :(.
I've decided to look at it in stages - now I've consolidated the exercise habit and the far-less-wine habit, I'll start on the calorie management. Not even Iron Wil can do everything all at once.
What fun to do a HM with your husband!

  6. Hey Lisa - I've no idea how this weight thing works.... I've not lost an lb or an inch in the last year despite all the training.... but you know what I'm kinda happy with it all so maybe that's why it's stayed - after all it's all about how ya feel isn't it....

Oh - and remind your daughter of her wise words in 20 years time and see what she says ;o)

Good luck to you and the "old man" with the half-mary!!

  7. Hee :) How old is your daughter btw? That is so funny what she said... she probably had no idea how it sounded, either.

  9. I think the scale is overrated, I think if you feel good inside that is more important.

You could try one of those Tanita scales that tells you, your metabolic age.. Mine always tells me I'm a teenager :)

  10. Ii always gain weight when I train hard especially for marathons. There is a weight challenge beginning Monday on Through the Wall. Link in on my blog to Iron Wil.

Good job on signing up for the half.

  11. I haven't lost at all during all this training. Frustrating. I felt a little like your daughter described this morning trying to do a 5k. I have so far to go. UGH.

  12. Off-topic question. You told me a while back that you started with the Giant OCR3w bike and upgraded this year. Why did you upgrade, and what did you get for doing so? I.e. what is better about your new bike that you notice while riding? Were you happy with the Giant for racing, while you had it?

PS apropos of this topic, I have two skinny athletic daughters - they like how "squishy" I am because I'm snugglier that way.

  13. I hope no one wants to measure my tummy at my shower...I don't want to know. Happy training for your next half marathon!

  14. I did start exercising to lose weight and I thinks it's crazy how much I work out now without shedding a pound. Oh well, I am having too much fun to care. That is funny what your daughter said!

  15. I am personally of the "I like a little extra in the middle" kind of girl. Once you deflate that tummy . . .it doesn't look too pretty. At least not on me. Hi, extra skin? LOL

  16. That was nice of your daughter! Her attempt to make you feel better!

  17. Oh yeah, there's something about that jelly belly that comes on after 40, and just wait until you're 50!! Seriously, I don't understand it myself. It is a daily battle of the bulge.
