Clarification from my Abs post:
* My mystery exercise seems to be cat pose, but with abdominal vacuum included - meaning you blow out all the air in your lungs and suck in/tighten up your abs hard as you arch up - hold it 20sec or so - and repeat.
* Rope crunches are done on a machine. Again, tighten the abs as you do these, exhale, and curl down slowly (do not pull straight down). I found a video that basically shows it, but he's not exhaling and doesn't emphasise tightening the abs as he goes, so it's not exactly what I'm doing.
Running and the Injury
* Had a truly dis-satisfying run yesterday. I felt off the whole time and my hammy thing hurt more than usualy afterwards. I think I'm going to skip running tomorrow and give myself some more recovery time from that stupid injury.
Perimenopause
* Why is it that women don't talk much about the transition time up to ten years that leads to menopause? I didn't even know it "perimenopause" existed until fairly recently, yet here I am smack dab in the middle of it with no clue what the heck is going on with my body. Knowledge is power, people! I don't think this needs to be something that's kept hush, hush.
The last bit has me worried. I see too much Oprah and it seems like it's going to be right around the corner for me. Ahhhhhhhhh. But yes I agree. I think it might have saved some hard times between my Mom and I when I was growing up LOL

ReplyDeleteI recently learned about perimenopause myself after trying to figure out what the hell was going on with me.
I think the reason it is hush, hush is that many doctor's do not believe it exists. Like just about every other woman specific disease or disorder. If it doesn't happen to men it must be the ranting of a hysterical woman... but I digress.
Sorry to hear about your injury. I can't help you much on perimenopause. However, I am impressed with your ab workouts! Woo!

Definitely risking that you'll never ever ever talk to me again: We call Cat Pose an exercise that requires you to be in the push up position but with the hands holding onto weights so you are balancing on the weights trying not to roll forward or back. Then you start pulling the weight to your chest alternating both hands while balancing on the other weight. Get the picture? Helps with core strength and pulling on handlebars in sprints or climbing. It's a great exercise. Painful but very effective.

Perimenopause is just as tough as the real thing. You don't know where it stops and starts. Many MDs don't talk about it or get it especially the males. I have found alot of great info on the web.

Hope the extra recovery helps your hammy. So...can we talk about perimenopause? I don't think doctors even talked about it until relatively recently, did they? Or maybe my elder female relatives were just too timid to ask about it.

Bummer about the hammy hurting. Hope some time off will help. And I thought I had some obvious symptoms of perimenopause several years ago but most seem to have disappeared. Strange!

ReplyDeleteAnd as a woman who has also just discovered the joys of perimenopause - I agree that there seems to be an informational black hole. What information I do find seems to conflict with the other bits I've gathered. Grrrrr.
I've never heard of preimenopause. I agree that women don't know enough about their bodies in general. How to get pregnant isn't as easy as they lead you to believe in 6th grad health class!
