I decided in my head that I would try out this Galloway Run-Walk-Run thing, and by golly, I actually put it into practice this morning.
- The 3:1 ratio seems like a good place for me to start.
- I ran faster in the run portions than I usually do for a training run, this wasn't intentional, it just sort of happened.
- I like walk breaks, who knew?!?
- Timing this manually sucked. A Galloway Gym Boss interval timer thing is on it's way, it just hasn't arrived yet.
- There are two Galloway training plans for half marathons, one for those just wanting to finish and one for those wanting to finish within a certain time. Since I haven't done a half marathon for 4 years and have been told that my half marathon days are over, I think I'll go with the "just finish" plan.
- I'm not fully committed to training for a half marathon, but I am committed to trying the Galloway method at least until the end of the year.
- Jeff Galloway is nearly 70 and still running marathons, he must be doing something right.
- I'm not sure any of my other running friends will do this with me, but I guess that's okay.
- This whole endeavor has sparked some new excitement/interest that I haven't felt since I first started running. That's got to be a good thing!
I used this idea when I hurt myself, but wanted to get back to training for the marathon. I had to remind myself to walk quickly when I had walk breaks and not just to slack off!
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE Galloway! I do keep up a brisk pace when walking - enough to give my body a little break, but not enough to really slow me down!
ReplyDeleteI have always done a modified Galloway (it's good for heaveir/slower athletes) - fingers crossed it gets you where you want - injury-free across the finish line!
ReplyDeleteI like intervals and walk breaks. I have been using the Bluefin apps Ease Into 5K app and the Bridge to 10K app for a while -- I often just pick a day that has the intervals I want to run. They created an app that lets you create custom intervals, but I couldn't figure out how to set it easily and sort of gave up.
ReplyDeletePeople who like it tend to really love it. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteI used my own version of this method in the last marathon I did. It hadn't been the plan but sometimes plans don't pan out so it ended up being my back-up plan.
ReplyDeleteSo many people swear by the Galloway Method. It sounds perfectly viable to me!
ReplyDeleteI know quite a lot of people that use his methods in different ways. All very successful, even in ultras.
ReplyDeleteI had the same experience! I ran faster than usual!

Excitement back is a good thing. Hope this is great for you.
