Freaking Knee

If you've followed my blog for awhile, you know that I have a recurring problem with my left knee.  To be more exact, I have an ongoing problem with my left knee and get periodic relief from it thanks to Euflexxa injections.  The underlying problem is never going away, so it is inevitable that the pain will return again and again.

It was bothering me in PHX.  I thought maybe it was due to spending more time on my feet than usual.  I've been in a bit of denial, but to be honest, it's bothering me again.  I have NOT been spending that much time on my feet. If anything, my training is way behind schedule.

I haven't decided what I'm going to do.
  • I could go back to the orthopedic doc now and request that she starts the injections, and that would force me into an 8-12 week break from running.
  • I could go back to the orthopedic doc now and see if she has some other suggestion besides the injections.
  • I could continue to scale back my running and wait until I get past one or both of the 10Ks on my schedule and THEN go see the orthopedic doc.
  • I could make a couple dozen death by oreo cupcakes and eat them all in one sitting.  I'm not sure what effect that would have on my knee, but I'd be happy for a little while until the sugar coma kicks in...
Blah.

[Update:  Husband suggests that I roll my IT Band to rule that out as the cause vs. my 'regular' knee issue.  Sounds like a good plan.  I'll try that first.]

  1. I selfishly suggest you bake/eat the cupcakes and keep the 10ks on your schedule for April...

  4. Came back to visit again. I agree with your husband...when my knee was bothering me my husband was convinced it was an ITB issue and foam rolling really helped. And cross training (at the time I was only running, a lot for a newbie).

  5. I like your husbands idea. Also, have you ever done a sports massage? I try to do them once a month to keep my legs loose. It really helps to prevent injuries.

  6. I'm really sorry that your knee is bothering you! hope your hub's idea shows that the problem isn't your typical knee issue and you can continue your training plans even if you have to scale back some on the mileage!

  8. Sorry for your knee. I had the same problem with my left knee last year. Thanks to 4 shots of hyaluronic acid i felt better but I had to drop the mileage.... after I don't know ... because I fractured my vertebra.
All the best and don't give up.

  9. i also vote for cupcakes and massage! my kinesiologist was explaining to me how the it band does 'splay' out into the knee area so your hubs could be onto something. it also ties in with the quad and hammy so could also be affecting the knee from further up. surely a massage in general is just a good idea :)
