Duke City '09 - Short Version

I did achieve a personal best for this course, my garmin says 2:25:22. The weather was great. The first half of the race was amazing. Husband ran with me, which was awesome. I saw several friends out on the course. In many ways, it was a great experience.

However, in the end, I was not the Happy Finisher that I wanted to be. I did not finish strong. It was not pain-free. All that pounding on the pavement really got to me. I felt like the course chewed me up and spit me out. That is disappointing, because finishing strong and uninjured was my primary goal.

What went wrong? I think it comes down to one thing. I run mostly on dirt trails because it's easier on my body, but the race is on pavement and I should have trained more on pavement to prepare my body. Lesson learned for next time.

Longer version tomorrow. Right now I think a nap is in order...

  6. Congratulations!

I completely understand where you're coming from! Sometimes it just beats you up. As you've said, lessons learned! I'm taking that lesson to heart.

I can only hope to do as well at my impending half marathon in a few weeks, even if I do get beat up.

Take care and enjoy some down time.

  7. I think thats an interesting point about running on pavement vs. dirt. I wonder if its better to do it over and over or just do it once during a race?
Anyway, hopefully you'll wake up from the nap happy about your PB!

  17. Lisa, you had a great race. I know you're not completely satisfied with the outcome, but every race is a learning event, and I have to wonder if we ever learn everything we should. That's why we keep trying.

  18. One more thought: personal bests usually come with some degree of pain. Sort of like having a baby. You pretty much forget about it after a while and enjoy the end result.

  19. You tuffed it out and crossed the finish line. THAT definitely matters...and I'm glad you were able to do that. I def hope you get to a proper mix of dirt and pavement training so U can finsih the way U want to next time.
