Knee is still problematic. Looking back, I know that I shouldn't have run on Sunday.
I've been smarter this week. I've iced and elevated the knee, wrapped it, and let it rest. In addition, I've been consistently taking the glucosamine, which I know is a long-term solution (not a short-term fix). It's improving, but it is nowhere close to 100%.
The Chips-n-Salsa half marathon is now about survival. My new goal is simply to finish without significantly greater pain than when I started - preferably with a smile at the end rather than a grimace.
I believe that resting was a good choice physically. However, it came at a significant mental / emotional price. I've lost my confidence.
Can I find it by Sunday morning? Only time will tell.
Recent Workouts
Mon - Core+Rest (skipped bike)
Tue - Rest
Wed - Rest (skipped run)
Thu - Core+upper body Strength (skipped run)
Fri - Swim 1400y (skipped run)
I am confident (and you should be too) that you are doing the right thing. And you are still very well prepared. This knee thing is a small bump in the road - dont let it get you down. Just run the race for fun and dont worry anything else. You will do GREAT!

ReplyDeleteI'm certainly no expert but rest is good for sore knees! (If it's a choice of pain and confidence or no pain and some doubts - I'm pretty sure I'd go for the painfree/no confidence option!) I think your confidence will come back tenfold when you get out on the course and get into your rhythm. I am sending happy, healing vibes your way. Enjoy your race!

ReplyDeleteListen girl, my confidence has flown the coop too. Don't buckle though -- that is what I keep telling myself.
ReplyDeleteHindsight will be 20/20 for sure but I bet that we will get it back soon. Toeing the line and doing the race the best you can will be good.
Underneath the thoughts and taking care of your knee you know you can do it.
Find something good to focus on race morning (the weather, your friends, your knee is feeling better . . . whatever works) and it will come together for you I know it. :-)
Lisa, you know I've been there done that. You gave me confidence to believe in myself. So now its my turn to pass that on to you. Have confidence that you will finish. Don't go beyond that.

Confidence isn't lost in a few days. It's just having a little break. It'll be back in time as soon as you put those runners on and start putting one foot in front of the other ... Trust me.
ReplyDeleteI love Groover's comment - confidence is just having a rest. Mine seems to be napping too, I'm getting scared for the tri. But you know, we'll both be fine I think. Your body knows what it has to do, and your rest lately will help it dig deep and make it happen on race day.
ReplyDeleteWhat helps me a little sometimes is thinking that "this is a race like none other I've done, and like none I'll do in the future". Its different because weather conditions, mental feelings, physical condition, the other racers - they are all so variable and impact performance. So just give all you have to this race on this day, and you'll have done well. Confidence thoughts to you!
I think the rest is the right move, and I think you can pull it all together on Sunday!
ReplyDeleteBummer, Lisa. Sounds like you are really taking good care of it. Keep on. I have went through a similar situation - thinking I could start running again, I tried to run on the treadmill yesterday and I still have shin problems. It really sucks to know I need more time.

ReplyDeleteHave you checked your glove compartment box? Under the bed? Your confidence is probably just where you left it, in your spirit, in your bones, you just can't feel it for some reason right now but let's hope you can on the run. Don't push that knee, those are the sort of body parts that can't be forced.

You'll be fine, just "believe" that...have fun...don't put stress on yourself to hit a certain time. Just remember, when things get tough, we're all here cheering you on!
