Ouch

Spent the weekend in Nashville attending my nieces wedding.  I had never been to Nashville before, so it was interesting to check out someplace new.  While we were there, we walked around a museum, we walked around downtown (stumbled upon the end of a multi-day relay race), walked around the grounds for the wedding/reception, walked to breakfast, walked around the Vanderbilt campus, and walked through the airport.  Lots and lots of walking.  Which is a good thing.  Except that my left heel started bothering me.

Now that I've been home a few days, I've done a little online research for heel pain and of course the first thing that comes up is plantar fasciitis which is NOT something that I want to be dealing with.  [Granted, I don't know for certain that it actually is plantar fasciitis, but in this age of instant online self-diagnosis, I'm assuming for the moment that it is.]

On Monday, I bought some Dr Scholl heel pain orthotics for my shoes. Tuesday, my heel was feeling better.  Then I wore a different pair of shoes and Tuesday and forgot to move the orthotics.  This morning, my heel is bothering me again.  So I guess I'm back to trying the orthotics today.

Needless to say, I haven't run since last Thursday. At the moment this isn't breaking my heart because I don't have any races planned, but nobody likes to be sidelined due to pain/injury. *sigh*

Question of the day:  Have you ever experienced heel pain?  What did you do about it?

  1. Lisa...this is the exact same thing that started plaguing me this training session. It wasn't PF but no one could figure out what it was. I just kept taping it like it was PF or an Achilles thing and went to massage for my (very) tight calves.
By some fluke..it is now totally gone. I still have no idea what it was. It was like a really deep bruise but I don't remember doing anything...
    my body is weird...

  2. I hope the pain goes away soon. I had heel pain for about a week and it went away, I hope yours does the same thing

  3. I hope it goes away as fast as it came on. No heel pain for me--knock wood.

  4. I've had plantar fasciitis before. Does your heel hurt worse in the morning (i.e. your first few steps out of bed)? That's usually an indicator of PF.

What helped me was rolling a golf ball under my foot to loosen the fascia. If a golf ball is too hard/painful, start with a tennis ball. Bring one to work with you, take your shoe off, and just roll it under your foot while you sit at your desk. Hope that works for you too!

  7. yea heel pain is no fun. Most of the time they want to blame plantar fasciitis or bone spurs.

  8. I just thought of something else too. Freeze a water bottle and roll that under your foot. Pressure and ice -- double bonus!

  9. I hope it goes away quickly. My husband had bad PF and used The Stick rolling out his calves and it went away.. it has been 5 years.. Worth a shot anyway. Good luck.

  10. Crap! I really hope this goes away soon! I haven't but my mom had a bone spur in her heel when I was a kid and it seemed awful to have to deal with.

  13. I've had some niggly PF pain but not bad. However, I have been dealing with Achilles insertion point issues on the back of my heels, not fun. Had to stop training and drop out of the nyc marathon. Icing, not running and rest, it's been 8 weeks at least and not 100% yet, but running short runs.

Morning is the worst getting out of bed, ouch!

  14. Frozen water bottle - roll it under your foot - a lot.

Take a dish towel. Pick it up with your toes several times.

I have lots of exercises but try these. Good luck.

  15. Oh no!! I hope this is only temporary and it's not PF! You might want to get it checked out before it gets worse. Luckily I never had any issue with my heel, but I know people who did and it's not fun! Hope it heels soon!

  17. I did have some random heel pain earlier this year and immediately self-diagnosed PF. I rolled on a tennis ball and frozen water bottle and tried to stay off my feet for a few days, and thankfully it subsided! Good luck.

Sounds like a nice weekend, BTW!

  18. agree with marlene, when I too used Google Dr I started wearing compression socks all the time, rolled on the frozen bottle and it did heal up :)

  21. Maybe you're just not used to all the walking. And/or the shoes weren't the best for all the walking?

  22. I've rested and iced my sore ankle and have been pain-free a couple of days. I hope your heel is feeling better today.
