Wind. It Blows.
Bike commuted to work today. On the way home, it was windy (as usual for this time of year) something in the 20-30mph range.
I spend a lot of time thinking about the wind on the way home.
First off, I don't so much mind a headwind, but the cross winds and gusts are rather difficult for me and downright scary at times.
Next, we really, honestly, and truly should find a way to take advantage of the wind energy in this part of the country. What a waste to just let it blow and not harvest it to it's full potential.
Third thought - I realized that I'm out riding in wind that would have kept me off my bike last year. I rock. Or roll. Or get blown off my bike. Whatever.
Final thought, have I mentioned that I don't care for the cross winds? I guess so. No harm in repeating myself to make a point, right?
So here's the deal. I cannot bike commute on Thursday. I don't work on Friday, so I have to ride in tomorrow if I'm going to hit my minimum 2x per week. Forcast for tomorrow is same as today only with gusts up to 40mph.
The ride home may not be pretty, but I think I'm going to go for it. <

That sucks about the wind. Sometimes when wind is so bad, (crosswind), I think it's going to blow me and my bike over. Hate it!
ReplyDeleteYou have a pt about the wind and energy. They do it overseas.
Wow, you should hang on tight if it's going to be 40 mph! I can't imagine trying to bike in that.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for getting out there on the bike to commute to work. I have a fellow co-worker who commutes to work on his bike just about every day.
ReplyDeleteNice job on using the bike for your commute. Be careful with that wind!
ReplyDeleteI am sick, sick, sick of wind!! Even today I was out for a short ride and everything was fine and dandy and then bam..wind. UGGHHH!! I am so sick of it! Leave me alone wind. ;.D
ReplyDeleteThat is awesome that you are going to go for it!!
I just looked at our forecast for tomorrow:
ReplyDeleteGusts to 30 mph in the morning...becoming 35 mph in the afternoon.
We are on the same weather pattern.
I'm with you... gusting crosswinds whilst your whizzing down hill (particularly) are SCAREY!!!
ReplyDeleteThankfully I don't have to deal with them much here :o)
Good luck with your commute!
Look at you getting all hardcore! Running in the wind is bad enough but biking?!? Go lisa!
ReplyDeleteHave you thought about adding extra ballast? :-)
ReplyDeleteBe careful,have fun and
ReplyDeleteTake Care!
40mph!?!
ReplyDeleteYou are a braver woman than I.
I salute you and your biking bravery.

Nice job - riding with that kind of wind is one heck of a workout.
ReplyDeletecute post, Lisa...you're so funny :)
ReplyDeleteI hope you made it home safely today with that wind! Great job getting your biking in!
Don't get me started about the wind-it does blow!!!
ReplyDeleteWow those are some crazy wind gusts! Hope you don't get blown over!
ReplyDeleteThose winds are crazy. You are doing a great job. Stay safe
ReplyDeleteI always said I'd rather have hills over wind any day! Good for you though pushing through that.
ReplyDeleteThe Hill Street Blues briefing Sgt. always said, Hey, let's be careful out there!
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or has 2008 been extremely windy so far! I look out the window and want to scream!
ReplyDeleteTake care on your bike!
just say the word and you can draft off me..!! ;)
ReplyDeleteWhere do you live again, Lisa? Way to go on your commuter rides!
ReplyDeleteYou'll be happy to hear that in Wenatchee, WA they have windmills throughout their apple groves to harness the amazing gusts of wind there!
ReplyDeleteGood luck with the wind on your bike. I can't even imagine how scary that must be. I only bike where it is flat and on calm days. I'm pretty wimpy like that! But I will get out and run on windy days, so I'm not a TOTAL wimp, I just have a healthy fear of falling off my bike.
That's the spirit, go out and tackle the wind.. It does suck out there sometimes.
ReplyDeleteBut it will make you superfast on the non-windy days..
The Wind is my #1 running nemesis. My face is pointy...but not pointy enough to break through a strong gale.
ReplyDeleteWind can be so tiring. I went to college in Sioux Falls, and it seemed like the wind blew in across the prairie all the way from Rapid City.
ReplyDeleteWindmill power sure seems like a great idea to me.
Good luck and take care with your
2X a week.
Crosswinds always suck. For running too. I'd rather run into the wind than have it hitting me from the side.
ReplyDeleteWow - riding to work, that is great!
