Dream it, then do it.

On the ride home from Buffman&Squeaky Triathlon in May, I decided that I was going to run the Chips-n-Salsa half-marathon this year. I signed up a few days later and have had three full months to prepare. I even put a count down to this particular race on my blog.

That being said, I now find myself one week out from my longest planned run ever, the half-mary itself.

This morning I ran 8.3 miles. Eight miles is becoming a comfortable distance. That's progress, and something that I feel good about. But 8 miles won't be enough on Sunday. Somehow, next weekend I need to dig in and find 5 more miles in me to get to the finish line.

I have calculated an expected finish time based on my training paces. I've looked at the finish times from last year. I can predict that I will be one of the last to cross the line. At first I thought that at least the walkers would be behind me, but they are letting them start 30mins earlier, and it's entirely possible that I may not catch up with them.

I've been one of the very last before, and I know what it feels like. You know what? It's actually not so bad.

13.1 miles for the first time, on my own terms, & at my own pace to the finish line. That's what my race is going to be about next Sunday.

Bring it on!!

  1. Go get 'em - now you have a goal for your 13.1 - finish ahead of the walkers. Even if you average 12 minute miles, that will put you tied with faster walkers at mile 10 - then if you are in real pain - you can just outwalk them to the finish line!!!

  7. I'm always in the back of the swim, so don't worry about it..

You will do great, you will pass people, if you don't that's okay.

Run your own race always, you have enough running legs under you to do the whole thing..

Endurance Race: 90% mental, 10% pyhsical.

  10. I found your blog through Geekgirl's...I don't have a blog, but have enjoyed reading others recently. I'm doing the Chips-n-Salsa half and the Elephant Man, too! I've done the Chips-n-Salsa a couple of times, and it is my favorite race. It's flat, and you get a great big breakfast when you're done! I know I will never win in my age group or anything, so am reminding myself that it is for fun!

You have a great attitude...I bet you'll do great and have a blast!

  12. Oh, I can so relate! Here's what I think will happen... you will be slow and steady, and let the rabbits get ahead of you from the start. But some of those rabbits will be hurting and limping at around 9 miles, and you will still be going strong - right past them.
