Not sleeping well

There are several things other things going on in my life that keep me up at night. It's a bad habit as there isn't much I can do about things at night, but that's when they trouble me the most. I don't wish to share the details on some of the more personal ones, but here's an example:

Background for Context: My kids will be heading out to New Orleans for Spring Break to help rebuild/repair homes destroyed by Katrina. I'm incredibly proud of them for choosing to spend their spring break this way. However...

Worrisome Thoughts: They are making me crazy by postponing packing until the last minute. Do we have everything they need? Am I caught up on laundry? It will take 2 full days of driving there and then again on the way back. What if something happens on the road trip? Son has to fly out Sunday to meet up with them. What if something happens with his flights or connection? We'll be travelling that week also. What if something happens while they are there? How easy it might be (or not) to contact us in case of emergency?

Reality: We can make an emergency trip Thursday for supplies if needed. I've supplied emegency phone numbers and back-up contacts that will know how to get a hold of us. Son is an experienced traveller, surely he can figure it out what to do if there is an issue with his connectons.

Sometimes I wish I could just turn off my mind, relax, and get some decent sleep. Sigh.

  3. Awww try having a HOT bath right before bed. It always makes my mind all tired and fuzzy :)

  4. Its natural for a mother to worry, they will be ok, you have helped them plan it out, they have contacts, its all embedded in their heads. I think it is great what they are doing.

    And kids are always last minute packers.

  7. there's a good visualisation - take all the 'worries' into your (imaginary hand) and then blow them away. Actually blow them out into the air. Another one is to visualise them in a big box marked "tomorrow" - every time they come creeping back, picture yourself shutting that box and putting it outside until the morning. Take care darl, fatigue can be dangerous

  8. I tend to stress out about stuff like that too. I keep a pad of paper by my bed so I can jot it all down and then ti's out of my head and I can usually fall asleep afterward.

  9. I don't think kids realize exactly how much sleep they cost us worrying about them.

    Pre-motherhood, I would've said go for some warm milk & a bath. Now I say go for the Xanax with a nightcap ;)

  10. I often have problems turning my brain off when trying to get to sleep. It is often stupid random things that keep me up all night.

    Just catching up. Great job on the run. Looks like you are making stellar progress this year

  12. I think it's pretty normal to be worried about your kids when they go on a big trip or when you'll be gone as well. How did we ever get by w/o cell phones when we were growing up?

  13. I haven't slept well in weeks. It is not fun at all. In fact I'm up reading blogs. Lol.
