The Return of Pain

Sounds like a good movie title, huh? It's really not a very interesting story, but it's turning into a bit of a mystery.

Waaaayyy back in early May I did something to my right leg. Not while cycling. Not while doing strength work. Not while running. While taking my dog for a walk. Bandit & I have something in common. We both chase bunnies. He does it a little more emphatically than I do though. On this particular walk, he jutted out to the left after a bunny faster and in the process, I stepped or stumbled funny. That was the beginning of Pain. I first mentioned in a post after Run for the Zoo, but it actually happened the day before.

At that time, I noticed that Pain got worse when I ran hard, but it wasn't unbearable and it went away when I walked. I tried to take it easy, but Pain returned and really messed up my attempt at the Virtual 10K on the 10th.

After that, I took a few weeks off from running. Pain seemed to go away completely.

Now it's back with a vengence.

Pain won't go away. Not when I walk. Not even now while I'm sitting and typing.

I tried to get an appt with my doctor to figure out what this Pain is, but can't get in for two weeks! I think I'll go to urgent care tomorrow and see if they can figure out what it is and what I should do about it. Pain is primarly in the area behind my knee (my knee pit, if you will), but radiates up my leg at times.

All I know for sure right now, is that this can't be good.

  3. You are on the right track by not waiting to your doc & going to urgent care. Hopefully they tell you what's wrong or at least give you some clue as to what's going on.

  7. Bummer, big time! Hope you find out what is causing it and how to make it better very soon.

Congrats on the metric century finish. That is a goal of mine! I'd like to finish one one day. That's a HUGE accomplishment.

That's great you're riding to work that much. I live so close to work, I could easily do the same. I may just have to try it.

  10. Sounds like rather a mechanical problem than an inflammation since you remember moving awkwardly what probably caused it. It doesn't sound like overuse injury from what you describe and runner's knee usually hurts behind the knee cap. Definitely get it checked out as soon as possible and I hope it's something simple that can be fixed in easily so you will be chasing bunnies again in no time.

  11. I hope you feel better.

Leg injuries are always hard to figure out. Most of the doctors just give you the standard treatment. R.I.C.E.,

But I did read somewhere that active recovery is better than doing nothing for minor injuries. That's one theory anyways.

  15. I'm so sorry to hear that. Maybe you could also get in to see a specialist sooner, like a PMR or a sports dr?

  16. Oh that sounds a real pain! I'm always suspicious of knee issues, particularly if you've twisted or fallen. Sensible to be having it checked out! Good luck!
