Good - Bad - Ugly

The Good

While we were on vacation, Son landed himself a prom date for next weekend and successfully got a tux ordered yesterday. Went dress shopping with Daughter for a different event (M88 Swing Thing) and found the cutest dress for her at a reasonable price. As challenging as teenagers can be sometimes, I must say that in some ways these are also the most enjoyable years for me as a parent. I love watching them grow into the wonderful young people that they have become.

The Bad

Son got pulled over at a sobriety check-point on his way home from work last night. He wasn't drinking, he wasn't speeding, he didn't run a stop sign or red light, but he did get a ticket. Apparently the passenger side headlight was out. Because he is under 18, he is required to go to traffic court with a parent. Sigh. The officer said that they will likely drop the citation if we come to court with proof that we promptly repaired the vehicle. It's at the shop right now.

The Ugly

As you may recall, I had six miles on my calendar for today with a pace target of 11:20 which should have been resonable. We had a false start earlier in the day, walked out to run and got a text from Daughter that she needed a ride home in an hour from a place 20 minutes away. Ran some errands, picked her up, had a truly awful lunch of hot dogs, fritos, and an apple (haven't yet had time to for proper grocery shopping since coming home from the trip) and tried again.

At around mile 2.5 I felt like I was going to puke and stopped to walk for a little bit to try to get my stomach settled. I tried running again for about another mile. Felt like I was going to puke again and kinda wished that I would so that I'd feel better! I was belching the whole time too. I finally gave up and walked the rest of the way home. bleh!

This has NEVER happened to me before, so I'm blaming it on my terrible choice for lunch.

After coming home, I plotted the run in half mile segments. Wouldn't you know, the run started off well and I was ahead of pace target before I started feeling sick!

Have a good weekend everyone!! Just remember, hot dogs, fritos, and an apple is not a good choice for a pre-run meal. LOL

  1. I hope that violation is cleared - what a pain!

Soryr about the cruddy run. I would definitely blame the hot dog. Ick! (But I know, sometimes you just have to eat SOMETHING!)

  2. Oh your poor tummy! I hate it when a meal doesn't settle with a run. Yuck!

Sorry about the ticket your son got. At least it was just for a headlight! Hopefully it will go away since you are getting it fixed.

Regarding your comment on my blog - sorry to hear that your weight is creeping up. What do you think the reason is? I hope you can get that figured out. I'd love to have you join me in my quest. :)

  3. Awwww... your son is going to prom. :D Bummer about the fix-it ticket but it must make you feel good to know that he's a responsible kid & not drinking & driving and/or speeding.

I think a hot dog and Fritos would make me feel sick even without shaking it all up in my stomach afterward. But, like Melanie commented, sometimes you have to eat even if it's stuff you normally wouldn't.

I just ate FOUR pieces of pizza, btw... I was starving!

  4. Wait a minute!

Did I just hear that the car is in the shop?

    For a headlight?

(I hope this isn't the first time I'm commenting on this site ;-))

  9. You have to go with your son? That's an aweful law. Ugh. At least we can be happy he wasn't drinking, speeding, or anything else bad. ;)

P.S. Thanks for the nice email. :)

  10. Wow, that's a bit harsh to cite your son to court.

Hope you are feeling better. Your lunch might well have been the cause for you feeling sick.

You done good mama, and I'll be foraging into teenage years with help from you. Deal?

BTW, I've had several meals over the years that have sabotaged a great run. Lesson learned.

Glad you got some helpful tips from the youtube video.

  15. thanks for the tip on the hot dog/fritos lunch...ha...
i've had a few fix-a-tickets before, glad it wasn't a real one (tickets are expensive here)...glad to hear you are enjoying the teenage years, many parents dread them (I love the Mark Twains quote on the subject: "when you have kids, put them in a barrel with a hole just big enough to pass food and water...when they become teenagers, plug up the hole.")

  16. Oof - hot dogs make me pretty nauseous an hour later without the running (but they sure are yummy going down!).

  17. That sounds delicious if you didn't have to run any afterwards.

  18. that seems silly to make your son go to court over a burnt out light!? What a waste of tax money! Hope you feel better soon!

  19. haven't had a hot dog in about 20 years -- phew! Sucks that you have to go to court now over the headlight, what a pain!

  20. Hope your tummy feels better! Bummer that you have to go to court with your son. Hope it gets dropped.

  21. It's amazing what a difference the right meal instead of the wrong meal can make on a run.

  22. Yes, I've learned the hard way what I eat before a workout can come back to me, literally.

Hope that traffic violation is dismissed!

  23. Just thinking about your lunch and running made my stomach churn, that's clearly the source of the problem. Good luck with the next one.

Your kids do sound like good ones for sure. Hope the ticket is tossed.

  24. The best pre-run meal is donuts... hands down :-)

  25. My son once had to go to traffic court (lots of speeding tickets before he learned his lesson!) but it was a good opportunity to show him the type of people he DIDN'T want to spend time with. As for going away to school, just think of it as another place to visit! Much as I hate to say it, even with my sons both here, as long as there is another woman in their lives, you don't have as much of a place in their lives as you would like. Girls are different. They always want to come home or be home. Pre race food? I wonder if you had a touch of whatever it was I had this week? I never actually got sick either, but sure felt like it!

  26. There is a horrible "bug" floating around out there, hope you don't have that and it was just from the nasty hoodoo (hotdog).

Your poor son, jeezzz, but I once got a $134.00 ticket for having my licence plate bulb burnt out....they threw it out of court....

  27. ohhh high school is such a fun time :) yay dances! i miss them.

that sucks about the ticket :( you cant do the traffic school online when you are a teen?

sorry the run was crappy too, i would definitely blame it on the lunch. hope the next one is better!

  28. UGH, Hot dogs definately not good running food. It is bitter sweet to watch our kids grow up. I am definately not ready for the driving years and know they will be here in a blink of an eye.
