Update

Has it really been four weeks since I posted an update? Hmmm. That might be an indication that it's time to retire the blog...

My foot is doing better, but I'm still hesitant to try running on itl. I will be doing an experiment with three different insoles to see if that helps. It's worth mentioning that I've walked quite a bit on my foot recently without the addition of an insole.  I can tell it's not 100% back to normal, and I want to give my feet some extra support.
  • An older pair of Sole Softec moldable inserts - I've had these for awhile and they were in another pair of shoes.  They are fairly rigid and have been heat molded to my feet. I've tried walking with these inserts in my kinvaras.  My foot felt okay, but my my hips began bothering me a bit.  This might have something to do with the fact that I molded these to a different pair of shoes with higher drop than the ones that I'm currently using?  Not sure.  Anyway, it's just one data point so far.
  • Sole Softec
  • A new pair of Superfeet berry inserts - I have these on order because they were cheaper online than in the stores locally.  Seem to have very high ratings.  Should arrive on Monday.  I'll replace the Softec inserts with these when they arrive so that I can test them out.

  • A new pair of Sof Sole Airr Orthotic inserts - These are also on order.  About half the price of the superfeet insoles. I plan to put these into a second pair of Kinvaras when they arrive.

Much as I hate to admit it, I'm starting to think that it actually may be time to hang up the running shoes for good and move on to something lower impact. My knee isn't all that happy even with the walking, so as soon as my foot isn't causing problems, my knee will likely begin to act up.  Sigh.

Walking isn't so bad as long as I have company.  Luckily, I have a couple of enthusiastic walking partners that have yet to turn me down even once.

  1. I had the custom-molded orthotics made and then the PT told me he preferred PowerSteps, which are about $40 a pair at running stores. I will be curious to see what you decide.

Have you seen a PT about the knee or the foot? They always tell me I need to strengthen my core, my quads, and my flutes. That would help the knee track better. My massage therapist also wants me to work on strengthening my feet and use YogaToes to help stretch them.

    1. I've seen just about everyone about the knee. It's arthritis, plain and simple. The Euflexxa injections help for a while, but it's only temporary. Nothing will cure it, it will actually probably get worse until at some point I have surgery. For now, I'm trying to work around it.

The foot is different. Seems to have been a microfracture. The question is WHY? And HOW do I prevent recurrence. It's frustrating.

    2. That's awful, I really empathize. I have been dealing with injuries of my own and it is so frustrating.

  2. Walking companions like that are priceless. They're always ready to go at the shortest notice and they never let you down.

  4. I'm with you on the foot thing. I've had lots of issues with my feet (have written a few blog posts about it); most recently a pseudo- foot fracture brought on by custom orthotics. I just returned to running (sans orthotics) after 4 weeks in the boot; things have been good until I decided to do vinyasa yoga this week. I think rolling over my toes aggravated the injury again. I'm frustrated too. I don't want to give up running--I'm just trying to figure out a way to make it work. Hang in there! Let's get through this together!

    1. Swimming would be good for my body, but I can't seem to get movitated to get to the pool. Cycling is definite possibility!
