Three Things Thursday - with questions

1) It seems like my back acts up every autumn. Maybe it's coincidence, maybe it has to do with the weather change, who knows. It started bothering me this weekend and I wanted to get ahead of it this time. I decided to call the chiropractor. I know that chiropractor's are controversial and I'm not really sure how I feel about them myself, but I do know that the chiropractor makes me feel better, at least in the short term. I tend to go when I have pain, but then don't go in for regular adjustments when I feel better. Anyway, I called the office, only to discover that my chiropractor passed away unexpectedly about 10 days ago. Wow. Another untimely death. Anyway, one of his friends who is also a chiropractor is seeing his patients temporarily. So I was able to get in for an appointment. I'm already feeling better, and have another appointment on Friday. Do any of you see chiropractors? Do you go for regular adjustments or just when you have pain?

2) I'm still struggling with the morning vs evening weekday running. I ran Tuesday as the sun was setting and really didn't dress appropriately. That was the first time this autumn that it got dark while I was out running. I need to be more diligent about wearing reflective clothing. Today I am scheduled for a tempo run. On the one hand, it would probably have been more comfortable to run this morning. But I had decided to run after work. Now I see that the forcast calls for thunderstorms this afternoon. D'oh! If the weather isn't cooperating, I'm thinking that I will run Friday morning instead. Which means my tempo run will be back-to-back with my long run. That is probably not ideal for someone like me who is prone to injury. I'm not sure what to do, I'd ask my Coach, but he left yesterday for vacation. What should I do if today's tempo doesn't happen? Run it Friday or just run easy Friday so I have fresh legs for the long run on Saturday?

3) I'm thinking about getting some compression leg sleeves. I'm more interested in the sleeves than the socks because I'm afraid to wear anything other than my regular socks. I'm not sure if I run enough to really need the sleeves though. But since I'm a slowish runner, I'm out there a long time even though my mileage isn't that high. Is it based on time on feet instead of miles?! I'm just not sure. Anybody know at what point compression socks/sleeves are useful?

  1. I am a believer in compression, though I am not a good runner, I can run back to back days if I use compression. It allows me to go hard and still not be "as sore" if I didnt use them. In my personal opinion, compression is best noticed the next day

  2. I do not see a chiropractor. At the end of the day, how you feel is most important :-)

Don't do anything Friday that will affect your long run on Saturday. If you could do tempo Friday and long Sunday, that would be fine. If not, let it go.

I have some compression sleeves. I feel like they are useful for recovery. My friend, Marni swears by compression clothes. They certainly don't work, and if you get pink ones, you'll look exceptionally HAWT in those skirts :-) ROFL...

  3. I too am interested in the sleeves..I use compression after my run but not in them - my feet get too hot and I needs me smart wool socks.
I started doing tempos on Sat and then long runs on Sunday until we hit the 20 mile mark on the Sunday runs. It wasn't too bad but took a bit of getting used to. (i.e. tired legs at first)

  5. I should probably see a chiropractor just as a checkup. I have a slight case of scoliosis (Slight bend in my lower two vertebrae) but it never bothers me. It hasn't been looked at in over 10 years.

I've been interested in compressions socks/sleeves but have not tried them yet.

  6. 1.)No, never used a chiropractor and don’t think I ever will.

2.)I would run easy on Friday.

3.)I don’t know when they would be useful. I don’t use it and think I’m too slow to need it.

  7. The way I see it, compression is helpful at all levels/distances/times. Regardless of how long/far you are running, they can help you recover faster.

I hope the weather cooperates so you can get that tempo run done tonight.

  8. I've been going to the chiro since I was born practically. I go fairly regularly ~ every two weeks. What is controversial about them? Def don't worry about what other people think - go if it helps you! Sorry to hear about the sudden passing, never easy no matter how close/not-close you are.

I would probably do Friday easy if you aren't able to run tonight. Then maybe throw a few tempo miles in the middle of your long run? (not as many though as on the schedule)

I have comp socks but I don't run in them - recovery only! They feel good but I can't bring myself to run in high socks, as fashionable as that is :)

  9. 1. I go to my chiropractor when things are so off that I can't work on it with exercises at sport's rehab. That being said, I don't see my chiropractor as often since I've been going to sport's rehab.

    2. I'd skip the tempo run and have fresh legs for your long run. That's just me, though.

    3. Compression sleeves for my calves have saved me. I used them for my Las Vegas RNR half marathon last year after I blew out my calf a week before. I would not have been able to run that day without them. For the first time in 11 years I've been dealing with shin splints and those compression sleeves help with the discomfort of that as well. Mileage has nothing to do with using compression sleeves. I know people who use them post run for recovery. PS... have both the socks and the sleeves and I personally prefer the sleeves. I use Zenzahs.

  10. I got to a massage therapist and not a chiropractor, but I was adjusted once at a race expo by a chiropractor and holy crap did it ever feel good. I say if it makes you feel better than you should keep doing what works for you!

  11. I have never been to a chiropractor. I did have a friend die from a complication from a chiropractor adjustment. Not fun. But if you trust and feel better that is good.
I use compression. I wear cwx running tights on all my long runs and I used 2xu and Zensah calf sleeves. I have raced and recovered in compression. I am not a fast person either - I think it does help.

Tempo-long run - hmmm. I would say go easy then long run add a few faster bits in the middle.

  12. Never used a chiro and haven't had to deal with the sun setting yet but you did make me think about it. I need to drag out all of my reflective crap.

  13. #2 happened to me too two weeks ago! And I was wearing black! Yikes!

  14. i have found good uses for compression sleeves and socks. first on long runs, I like them to help with muscle fatigue and of course after for recovery.

additional on long speedwork sessions or races I have like the compression sleeves. I think for me at least they prevent the cramps that I often get in my calves when I finish a really hard effort

  15. I've never been to the chiropractor. I will chime in with the chorus here and say go with an easy run on Friday if you can't do the tempo tonight.

  16. 1. I have no opinion on Chiropractors.
    2. I am in no condition to give running advice.
    3. I don't own a pair of compression socks but I see quite a few bloggers write about how much they love them.
All in all, I'm of no help to you today. Have a great run, whenever you do it. ;)

  17. I've done some research on compression and the science shows that compression provides no benefit during exercise but helps with recovery. The fuzzy line of when to wear it to help recovery is difference for everyone. I try to wear them when I run longer than 10k.

  18. I don't see a chiropractor, but I know people who swear by them, and I have considered going. Just to see. I kinda think carting a 22 lb kid around on my hip might be throwing some alignment off :)

  19. So much great advice...isn't blogland wonderful when we have questions :)

    I've seen a PT, but never a chiro...just hasn't been necessary.

I agree that you should go easy before your long run...and thanks for asking about compression sleeves...I've been curious :)

  20. I don't run a lot but I always use compression sleeves since my shin problem. They've been very helpful I think. I'd say there is no harm in trying them out!

I always kick myself for not running in the morning because when I get out there the weather is always different.

  21. I always wanted to try the compression socks! I hope that you have a great weekend and your back gets better :)

  22. My stroke surviving friend has scared me from every seeing a chiropractor. So I won't go see one.

Thank you for the questions on the socks. I like all the answers.

  23. I have pink Zensah compression sleeves (not socks). I've started wearing them after my halfs. Definitely the same day, sometimes the next day too. Ever since I started wearing them, I haven't had the continual pain in my calves that I had at the beginning of the summer. I think they are a great investment.
