It is always exciting to run with a goal in mind.<br /><br />Believe it or not, sometimes running more short runs during the week will actually help prevent injury. The higher your overall mileage the less of a jolt to your system the long run is. Your body will recover from that long run better if it is not 50% of your total mileage for the week.
